This week we are focusing on poetry and how writing down our feelings creatively can have an impact on our mental health. Across the week we will be publishing a range of poems, these poems do not belong to ECBC and have been submitted by external writers.
Todays poem was submitted by Lily May.
There’s an animal on my back.
He’s gnawing at my brain,
Feeding on my pain.
There’s an animal on my back.
He’s sucking out my soul,
Leaves me feeling cold.
There’s an animal on my back.
Putting lead on my limbs,
So selfish of him.
There’s an animal on my back.
He makes me feel fatigued,
He’s so full of greed.
There’s an animal on my back.
He shuts me off from others,
And it’s me that suffers.
There’s an animal on my back.
He makes me feel confused,
Alone and abused.
There’s an animal on my back.
Sometimes he’s small,
Hardly there at all.
There’s an animal on my back.
Sometimes he’s huge,
I know when he looms.
There’s an animal on my back
There he lives,
Always takes, never gives.
There’s an animal on my back.
He leaves a lasting impression,
His name’s depression.
There’s an animal on my back.
He’s back.
